Can you believe Andrew's one year old?!
To celebrate, we had dinner with family at Gochi. We managed to snag one of their tatami rooms which turned out to be perfect for Andrew as he could run around us while we ate. Super convenient.
We also learned that he really, really likes the beef tongue in potato butter sauce. I mean, who can blame him? The dish is absolutely delicious. However, this meant that he refused to eat anything else until he had eaten all the beef tongue he could see.
After dinner we headed home for the birthday cake. My mom had always baked and decorated a cake for our birthdays when I was a kid and I wanted to continue that tradition. I don't particularly enjoy baking, but I think I did a credible job for my first cake:
It didn't quite come out as I'd envisioned it (next time I'm totally using buttercream icing instead of what this recipe called for), but the lemon layer cake underneath was pretty good.
I think Andrew was a little confused at the whole cake and singing bit, but he sure perked up when it came time to open his presents. I'm not sure if he was more interested in the presents themselves or the ripping and opening of the boxes they were in. Either way, he seemed to have a lot of fun (and his toy collection is now an order of magnitude larger).
So now it's been year, things are going to get easier, yes? He hasn't changed much physically in the past couple months, but he does seem to be learning things faster. He's on the verge of being able to run (oh no!) and communicate (yay!) and just started stringing signs together (e.g. "more" and "food"). He's also directing us when we carry him now by pointing in the direction he wants to go. I just can't wait till he's able to talk to us, either verbally or by signing.
I don't know what will happen next, but I can't wait to find out.
Go Team Andrew!
